INTRODUCTION
Technology in health has been helping humans to make it easier to diagnose, monitor, and treat the patient. There are various technologies have been created to have more accurate results and reliable to us. In this section, I will discuss the effect of technologies in clinical settings. According to Eun-Shim Nahm, Ph.D., RN, FAAN using technology in the hospital can give better client care by having the combination of clinical and technical experts to create a better instrument. As attested by Anna E. Schoenbaum, DNP, MS, RN using this combination can make a big impact in clinical settings that can make an efficient workflow for every healthcare provider (Nursing Informatics: Connecting Patient Care and Technology, 2017).
1. You can start by enumerating the videos you have watched and tell the specific parts that have struck you the most.
I was amazed about the technologies that have been created to make the life of people, not just the patient have more access to healthcare. After listening to Daniel Kraft's speech, I was astonished by his care for everyone. He showed different kinds of applications and gadgets that could help anyone handle their own information such as their monitor their vital signs. One of the struggles of a doctor is when the patient always forgets his information such as when was the first time they experience the symptoms, utilizing the gadgets and applications, it would easier to track their status. Some of the apps he said were already built-in apps in our smartphones. For instance, a smartphone could track how many steps you had that day and these could be used as a basis for your physical activity. One of the technologies mentioned is a drone which is helpful to deliver medication from one another, it was also used in the Philippines during the pandemic for disinfection in Pasig City (Go & Nicole, 2020). In conclusion, all mentioned technologies are helpful to have cost-effective and efficient access to healthcare.
2. In our recent battles with the pandemic, are we in the ‘sick care’ state or ‘health care’ state?
Daniel Kraft defines 'sick care' as intermittent and reactive which means that the patient only goes to the hospital when they feel something bad in their body and the healthcare reacts to it. Whereas, 'health care' refers to continuous and proactive which means continuous monitoring and giving healthcare even though they don't feel any abnormalities. Moreover, to answer the question in my opinion, we were in a 'sick care' state because not all Filipinos are aware of the ability of their smartphones and lack education about health. During the pandemic, it is expensive to have an antigen or RT PCR test for confirmation of COVID. Therefore, the care is intermittent. Additionally, it was difficult to have access to healthcare. Not only patients and non-patient suffer during that time but also the health workers, There are a lot of factors that contribute to our system problems that lead to difficult situations, especially how the government handles the situation. Hence, I do understand that we are not that innovative to handle that kind of situation and the important is we have been able to overcome the crisis.
3. When do you think tech convergence happened and how it has impacted healthcare delivery?
After the Medicare reimbursement law was passed in the early 1970s, the use of computers in health care began to develop, but it wasn't until the late 1970s, when minicomputers were accessible, that computers became widely employed in health care. The main aspects of computerization were hospital payment, invoice processing, and clinician billing. The administrative tasks of clinical departments including the laboratory, radiology, and pharmacy were also partially automated by computers (M. think, 2003). With the help of the computer, the work of the healthcare provider becomes efficient and productive up until this year we are still using it but with better design and advanced functions. For instance, EHR is run by a computer, and EHR helps to store the data of the patient.
4. How can you compare old technology with new technology? Cite the pros and cons for both time frames mentioned.
The technologies keep on updating and making them more portable and having more features. Old technologies are truly beautiful because it was the baseline of the present technologies and they just alter it to make them more functional.
Old computer (1970) :
Pros:
- It can be more reliable because only experts can use this compared to modern computer
Cons:
- Difficult to use
- Has a capacity of 1024 bits
- Compared to modern computers, they are outdated and weak.
New computer (2022):
Pros:
-Easier to use
-There is now a portable laptop
-1th-gen Intel Core i5/i7/i9
Cons:
- It is expensive
5. Interdisciplinary approach seems to be the way to go in solving 21st-century problems: do you agree with this statement or not? Defend your answer.
Yes, because an interdisciplinary approach will help for better patient care. When providing high-quality healthcare to patients with medical requirements, an interdisciplinary approach is a holistic procedure that involves interaction between experts from different fields of study. Merging the professional expertise, knowledge, and abilities of each team member is one of the main goals of an interdisciplinary approach. The collaborative effort aids in therapy, expedites recovery, and lowers healthcare expenses. These would help Filipinos to have better care and access to healthcare.
